On Jan. 3, theInstituteofSupply Managementannounced manufacturing expanded for the 29th-consecutive month. "Manufacturing is finishing out the year on a positive note, with new orders, production and employment all growing in December at faster rates than in November, and with an optimistic view toward the beginning of 2012," says Bradley Holcomb, chair of ISM's Manufacturing Business Survey Committee.
Most economists expect continued growth in the U.S.economy and in manufacturing, but that growth is likely to be modest. The Manufacturers Alliance for Productivity and Innovation (MAPI) expects manufacturing production to increase 3% in 2012, outstripping U.S. GDP growth which MAPI predicts will be 2.1%. MAPI Chief Economist Daniel Meckstroth says, "Pent-up demand for postponed consumer durable goods continues to exist, particularly in motor vehicles. In addition, firms are profitable and have the need to spend more for both traditional and high-tech business equipment, and reasonably strong growth in emerging economies is still drivingU.S.exports."

HELP WANTED - desperately
This picture tells it all, companies can NOT FIND skilled labor and many don't want to work 2nd-3rd shift!
Wake Up Congress and Mr. President, it's time to retrain Americans to be in Manufacturing/Assembly industry.
We need machinist and Mold makers and Tool Die and makers, not more Busiennes Grads.
End of the Tax Code 179 is January 1, 2012.
We all hope congress wakes up and re-signs legislation that continues the Tax Code 179, Accelerated Depreciation on machinery that has stimulated the Machine Tool Industry and has helped so many USA based companies Re-Tool to be competitive.
U.S. auto sales continued to grow in October, with Chrysler the big winner after posting a 27% gain that outpaced single-digit growth at Ford and General Motors and a loss at Toyota.
US AUTO INDUSTRY REBOUNDS, CHYSLER SALES UP 27% in October. 13.5 Million Cars expected Sold 2011
Analysts attributed much of the improvements to the release of pent-up demand after years of historically low sales and recent supply disruptions.
Total industry sales were up 7.5% from the depressed levels of October 2010 at 1.02 million vehicles, according to Autodata.
October's seasonally-adjusted, annualized rate of 13.26 million vehicles was also an improvement over the 13.1 million rate posted in September and the 12.12 million rate recorded in August, according to Autodata.
Trip To China 9/2011 Validates, USA Can Compete!
Our biggest tool against incoming imports from China, India and other countries of low labor cost, no benefits, lesser style of living is our ability to be EFFICIENT and PRODUCTIVE.
During a recent trip HPM went on to China in September, 2011, we visited manufacturing facilities there that were so called "state of the art" for manufacturing. It is TRUE that they were nice facilities, had new equipment, but labor there is woefully behind USA and Europe in it's ability to perform multiple task and take ownership of projects and to be innovative.
They are very far behind the USA in the way they approach manufacturing. What China's industrial base has going for them is an artificially supported government sponsored system that pours money into their government supported and in many cases, government owned companies, to off-set these gapping deficiencies in efficiency and low cost labor.
But things are changing rapidly there in China. We were told the better employees at these companies will receive 50-100% raises each year to keep them on so competition doesn't hire them away.
So .... PLEASE Wake Up Mr. President, Senators and Congressman and extend this Tax Law 179 please.
